The Fandom Revolution™

Autostraddle has listed over 140 lesbian and bisexual characters that have died on TV (the list started with 65). Last March 3rd, we added another one to that list with the death of Commander Lexa. Her death was initially met with a myriad of emotions: from disbelief and denial to anger and rejection. Showrunner Jason Rothenberg has since chosen to not speak of the issue even saying that he would prefer to “talk about something else” when prompted about Lexa’s death. His silence and decision to kill of Lexa after months of building up the romance between Clarke Griffin and Lexa has been met with criticism from both fans and several media outlets

But still, people who do not follow The 1OO are left with one question: who is Lexa and what makes her so important? Perhaps it was because of the enchanting acting of the actress. Perhaps it was because underneath her stoic mask, we knew she was just a girl like most of us who was torn between duty and heart. Maybe we just really wanted to have another lesbian on TV considering LGBTs only make up around 4% of all TV characters. At the end of the day, we all fell in love with Lexa because we see ourselves in her.
